How high should you mount your TV?

Start with your seated viewing position and room layout. There is no single mounting height that suits every TV and every home.

Find your screen’s starting point.

Enter your diagonal screen size and seated eye height. We’ll sketch an approximate 16:9 screen centered at eye level.

Planning estimate only. Assumes 16:9; excludes bezels. Not bracket-hole placement, structural advice or approval for a fireplace location. Check the actual TV dimensions and test a removable outline from your seats.

Start with your seated viewing position and room layout. There is no single mounting height that suits every TV and every home.

Measure the room before choosing the height

A number copied from another living room can be misleading. Seat height, reclining position, screen size, viewing distance and furniture all affect the result. Begin from the position you actually use, including whether people watch seated, standing or reclined.

Try the position before drilling

Use a removable paper outline that matches the screen’s dimensions to discuss placement. Sit in the usual seats and consider where your eyes naturally rest. This is a planning exercise, not a substitute for checking the bracket and wall. Avoid choosing a position solely because it is centered between the ceiling and a console.

Account for the equipment around the TV

A soundbar, cabinet, screen controls and cable connections may affect placement. Leave the manufacturer’s specified ventilation space and make sure moving equipment will not collide. Some TV models have connections in a separate box that needs its own practical location.

Treat fireplace locations as a separate assessment

A fireplace can create heat, access and structural questions in addition to viewing-height compromises. A pull-down mount is not automatic approval for that location. Check the fireplace, TV and mount manufacturers’ requirements and discuss the full movement path with the installer.

Prepare a useful placement brief

A good brief explains the room, rather than prescribing a universal number. Share the TV model, seating arrangement and a wide photo of the intended wall. Mention future furniture changes before work is agreed.

  • Main seated and standing viewing positions.

  • Soundbar and cabinet dimensions.

  • Fireplace or unusual wall conditions.

  • Preferences for visible or concealed cables.

A REAL-WORLD DECISION / ILLUSTRATIVE SCENARIO

My console makes the eye-level position impossible. What should I change first?

Measure the console and soundbar together before moving the screen higher. Try a paper outline from your usual seats, then compare another console or wall if practical. Record the trade-off explicitly: furniture alignment is not the same as viewing comfort. The calculator is a starting point, not a guarantee that a particular position works for every viewer.

Before agreeing to the work

  • Test seated and reclined positions.
  • Include the real TV bezel and soundbar dimensions.
  • Keep mounting-hole measurements separate from screen height.
