Great sound shouldn’t hide behind furniture.

A soundbar placement guide for dialogue, clearance and a setup everyone in the room can use.

Start with the product design

Some soundbars use upward-firing or side-firing drivers with specific placement requirements. Read the manual before putting the product inside a cabinet or beneath an overhang. A tidy-looking position may obstruct speakers, sensors or access. The product design and room matter more than matching a line from an inspiration photograph.

Above, below or on the console?

Compare permitted mounting options with available space. Account for the TV’s controls, infrared receiver, lower edge and ventilation. If the soundbar attaches to a TV bracket, check compatibility and total loading. Consider what moves when the TV swivels and whether the whole assembly clears furniture throughout its travel. Universal brackets are not automatically compatible with every soundbar.

Connect deliberately, then listen

Check which ports support ARC or eARC and which formats both products support. Cables cannot add missing capabilities. Map any receiver or console in the path as well. Test familiar dialogue from usual seats at everyday volume, check lip sync and consider neighbors when positioning a subwoofer. Confirm how the household will control volume, power and inputs. Record those steps instead of leaving the room dependent on whoever performed the setup.

The useful takeaway: Keep speaker paths and TV controls unobstructed.

Bring this to your project conversation

  • Keep speaker paths and TV controls unobstructed.

  • Bring both product model numbers.

  • Check the proposed mounting method.

  • Test dialogue and everyday remote control.

Check the details before you commit

This is a planning guide, not an installation specification. Product capabilities and room conditions vary. Use the current manual for your exact model and ask the appropriate qualified professional to assess structural, electrical or unusual site conditions. A photo can start a conversation; it cannot verify what is inside a wall.

A REAL-WORLD DECISION / ILLUSTRATIVE SCENARIO

Can the soundbar sit inside the cabinet to keep everything hidden?

Check the speaker design and permitted clearances first. Cabinet walls or shelves can obstruct side- or upward-firing drivers and affect access to controls. Test from the real seats and confirm the TV receiver is not blocked. A clean appearance should not depend on placing the product somewhere its instructions do not permit.

Before agreeing to the work

  • Review driver directions and clearances.
  • Check TV sensor and port access.
  • Test dialogue and lip sync from the seats.
